James Rix
A Journey Through Courts: A Life of Basketball, Civil Rights and Beyond.
James E. Rix was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up in the Woodstock community, in rural Shelby County. Currently residing in southwest Louisiana near Baton Rouge, he is an author whose debut book is “A Journey Through Courts: A Life of Basketball, Civil Rights and Beyond.
Growing up in a segregated environment his family, his community and his faith were very instrumental in his growth.
James as a teenager became involved in the civil rights movement in Memphis which led to his participation in the final march of Dr. Martin L. King Jr. and to witness Dr. King’s final speech.
Athletics afforded him the opportunity to pursue higher education.
He became the first African American basketball player to attend a small Christian college in North Georgia. As a Viet Nam veteran he honed his survival skills in combat which later translated into a successful career in Corporate America from the ground up, which led to much success in the beverage industry. He also shared his expertise as a coach where he mentored many young athletes.
His accomplishments have led him to be inducted into his school’s athletic Hall of Fame and to serve on the university’s Board of Trustees.
His story is not just about personal achievements. It is about resilience and perseverance.It’s about navigating a society that once tried to keep him on the sidelines and about the joy of giving back.
